Purpose of the foundation
The purpose of the foundation is "to promote scientific research and education in Hugo Schuchardt's field of work, in particular research into the languages and cultures of the Romance peoples and their relations with neighboring cultures". The group of beneficiaries includes academic staff and students at universities and other institutions dedicated to the above-mentioned research and teaching areas.
This purpose is achieved in particular by
- the approval of contributions to printing costs for works in the field of Romance studies and general linguistics which have been produced at the University of Graz,
- the promotion of scientific publications
- the promotion of lectures by external researchers,
- the granting of cost subsidies and scholarships for scientific trips and excursions.
In the years 2011 to 2016, the following funding was provided, among others: Funding for the publication of academic papers (22 papers), funding for student research (11), readings and guest lectures (7), research trips (1), conferences (9). Particularly noteworthy is the funding of the processing of Hugo Schuchardt's estate with the aim of making his work and data accessible online to international experts (Hugo Schuchardt Archive). In addition, a Hugo Schuchardt Endowed Professorship was established and realized for the first time with the creolist John Holms. Funding was also provided for the inclusion of the creolistics library from John Holms' estate in the holdings of the University of Graz.
